Award-winning Master Bath for Her Features the Feminine Charm of Classic French Architecture
By KLAFFStyle Editorial Staff
KLAFFS Kitchens Designs a Room that “…reads like a history book, smells like lavender.”
Yes, you did read the headline right. KLAFFS Kitchens creates not only award-winning kitchens, but baths as well! The kitchen department is the source of beautiful custom cabinetry that – in the hands of its talented designers — can translate to the bath, providing great style as well as highly functional storage options.
Here’s a perfect example. KLAFFS Kitchens was presented with a design challenge for empty nester clients who owned a 1920’s classic French manor estate, previously remodeled with indifference to the character of the home.
One wing of the upper level of this magnificent residence housed the master suite. Typical of older European-style homes, this private area featured small divided spaces — two sitting rooms, two ordinary bathrooms and countless small closets. The owners sought a total renovation of the wing that would still provide separate baths but more gracious and elegant – personal retreats; one for him and one for her.
The specific challenge; “to create a feminine bathing retreat.”
There was a greater imperative to create a wonderful ‘her’ space. Conceptually, the room needed to feel warm, intimate and cozy. Most important: the existing gas fire place had to figure prominently in the new design. Other requests included; a separate toilet compartment, a custom vanity with furniture appointments, a shower with seat, and a larger walk-in closet. KLAFFS designers set out to accomplish all this while returning authentic period styling to the home.
The global focus for the design team was to ensure the space reflected the grandeur and inspiration of the home’s French architecture, while addressing the needs of a modern woman with modern amenities. The team would come to say that the solution had to, “…read like a history book and smell like lavender.”
The space plan provided a new closet and vanity wall that allowed the team to position a replica of a French antique soaking tub directly in front of the fireplace. A partition between a window and the new vanity created a well-lighted toilet and shower compartment.
With the fixtures located, there were now three main focal points within the primary space: The eight-foot vanity across the back wall, the soaking tub to the left and the fireplace and mantel surround to the right. This provided an intimate view of the fire from the tub.
To capture the timeless elegance of a historically rich period, the design replicated elaborate and ornate details found throughout the home. The design team chose to focus attention on the soft curves of a scroll and leaf motif to unify the elements of the room. As the design keystone of the space, this scroll detail is seen in the cabinetry doors, the cabriole legs and toe skirt, the cantilevered sink apron, the beveled glass mirror frames and the mantel surround.
This same detail continues in the mosaic tile-bordered floor. A mosaic medallion is centered between the fireplace and soaking tub and the custom design was also featured in the shower enclosure mosaic and the hand painted ceiling and wall above the tub.
The vanity cabinetry and millwork is lightly stained and glazed maple. The countertops are crema marfil marble. The custom mosaic is of natural marble in neutral shades of beige, gold, taupe and gray. To accentuate these details, the crystal wall sconces, ceiling light fixtures and the cabinet hardware all incorporate a fleur de lis element. The room is rimmed with crown moldings featuring both dentil and egg and dart carvings.
The wall colors and the window fabrics are soft, subtle and plush — supporting the sparkle and glimmer of the room’s jewel tones. This space met the client’s objective of supporting a lifestyle that values romance, history and femininity. This stunning bath suite design took one of the top honors in the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s National Design Contest.
