George to the Rescue: KLAFFS Contributes to a Heart-warming Renovation Project in Westchester

Beautiful Child with Cerebral Palsy Inspires the Designer/Builder Team
Back in December — around holiday time — we wrote about KLAFFS’ participation in an upcoming episode of the Emmy Award-winning NBC show George to the Rescue, where host George Oliphant and his team of contractors and designers rescue the homes of deserving people. We couldn’t say too much about the episode until after it aired – and now it has. You can watch the episode. And here’s more of the inside story.
KLAFFS Scarsdale manager Anthony Dilascio was asked whether KLAFFS would supply plumbing and lighting fixtures to the project by two long-time customers, contractor Dan Divitto of DPD Builders in Bedford Hills, New York and designer Phyllis Harbinger of DCI Studio in Cortlandt Manor, New York. The two didn’t know each other prior to being chosen for the George to the Rescue episode, but soon realized that Anthony was the ‘go to’ guy for both of them for plumbing and lighting. Of course, KLAFFS was thrilled to contribute.
The beneficiaries of the home renovation were the members of the Finnegan family of Yorktown Heights, New York. The inspiration for choosing them was to make life more comfortable for their beautiful little daughter and sister Mia, who has cerebral palsy. Mia’s two older brothers and her parents Bob and Liz — a firefighter and a devoted mom — also gained some well-deserved amenities.
Dan Divitto shared his George to the Rescue experiences with KLAFFStyle. First, he was surprised to get the call from George to the Rescue out of the blue.
“The George to the Rescue team said they’d heard that we do high quality work and knew we’d been around the area for the last 29 years,” said Divitto. “It was an interesting conversation where we learned about the situation and what they required of us. We quickly agreed that we could contribute what they needed and that we were happy to help.”
Initially, the project involved redoing the basement as a safe play area for the kids. Later they decided to surprise Mia by redoing her room. Then the father, Bob Finnegan, sent George a video requesting that they consider tackling the master bathroom as well, to create a well-deserved sanctuary for his wife as a surprise to her. The master bathroom was old and the shower was completely non-functional. The entire family had to share one small bathroom.
The team decided to tackle the master bathroom as well! KLAFFS provided all the plumbing and lighting fixtures for the beautifully designed room.
The project was a whirlwind effort.
“We had to complete the whole thing in a very tight timeframe,” said Divitto. “That included drawing plans, getting permits, gathering materials from our vendor team and getting the work done. Even though we wished we had a bit more time and that it was often hectic with eight or 10 workers in a space at the same time, it all came together wonderfully in the end.
“My team, Phyllis’ team and the George to the Rescue folks hit it off right away. We worked great together and it was a real pleasure. In particular, I was so glad to meet Phyllis. She’s an incredibly talented, honest and warm-hearted person. Everything she picked looked terrific and she did an amazing job with the lighting. We’ve become friends and will certainly work together again. And of course we couldn’t have done it without KLAFFS kind contribution of bath, plumbing and lighting fixtures.”
According to this generous builder, the big reveal was a truly emotional moment for the whole crew.
“We could hear how excited and moved the family members were as they went through their home and saw all the improvements. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. What an incredible experience!”
